Bursting at the Seams: A Collection of Poetry explores that world and a coming of age story while growing up black in the Midwest in Indiana. Massey's introduction to the world is through her family and she uses vivid and vibrant imagery to inspire and move the reader through storytelling. Massey fosters a language and dialogue about rape culture effects on family, fighting illness, gossip, sexuality, being in love, falling out of love, womanhood, identity, spirituality, religion, about blackness and what it means to be black and/or safe in America. With rich and compelling language, she explores the complexities of intersectionality through a collection of learned experiences walking into womanhood.
