The Return, a 3 days writer workshop series where participants will focus on their wellness and craft/practice through:

a craft talk , 2 workshops, a yoga session, and opportunities to be in community with other writers.

• a reading list of books and podcast

• new poems or ideas on new approaches to previous pieces

•opportunity to receive one-on-one feedback from guest speaker

Instructors x bios: 

Charlie Redd ,will be leading the yoga session, is a Sound Healer, Yoga Teacher, Anti-Oppression facilitator, and owner of Haven Yoga Studio. She has spent the past seven years sharing wellness practices with unique audiences and environments in Indianapolis. Charlie’s work is an invitation to activate our minds, align our bodies, breathe deeply, practice deep listening, and rest in our true power.

Bree Jo’ann is an MFA candidate in Butler’s Creative Writing Program and author of Black Glitter. She is developing a program to support creativity in urban youth called the Safe Space Network.  Along with writing, she loves comics, watching Fright Club and playing Animal Crossing with her husband and son.  Find her on Twitter @how2baradwytch.

Allyson Horton ,our guest speaker, is author of Quick Fire, her first collection of poetry (Third World Press Foundation). She received her MFA in Creative Writing from Butler University. Her poems have appeared in It Was Written: Poetry Inspired by Hip Hop, Not Our President, Brilliant Flame! and Black Panther: Paradigm Shift or Not? Her work has most recently been published in The Indianapolis Review and literary magazine African Voices. Currently, she teaches and resides in Indiana.

Chantel Massey  (she/her) is a poet, author, teaching artist, and educator based in Indiana. Massey has received fellowship and retreat invites from Wintertangerine, Open Mouth Poetry, and The Watering Hole. She is a Best of Net Award nominee and 2020 Indiana Eugene and Marilyn Glick Author Awards Emerging Author nominee for her first collection of poetry, Bursting At The Seams  (VK Press).  Massey founded the UnLearn Arts poetry workshop series, serving to inspire writers through a Black classic and contemporary arts-centered curriculum. Massey's work advocates for human rights and social justice. Her work explores  Blackness, womanhood, identity, memory, familial relationships, the process and act of giving up self- betrayal, and the riot of Black joy.  Massey is on a life-long mission to inspire curiosity, celebration, creativity and challenge how we engage with the world. Her work can be found featured in IndianapolisReview, Turnpike Magazine, and other online and print publications coming elsewhere.
